Comment on Organic Box Schemes: Riverford Farm by Anna http://acookslibrary.com/2010/06/24/organic-box-schemes-riverford-farm/comment-page-1/#comment-409 Anna Fri, 02 Jul 2010 21:31:53 +0000 http://acookslibrary.com/?p=736#comment-409 Thanks Karen! I agree with your friend and think that there might be someone else out there probably wanting to ask the same question, so it is easier for you just to answer it once. And yes I got your email, thank you again. Thanks Karen!

So in answer to have I ever used Abel and Cole, yes, I have, on and off for many years but I find that Riverford have a better record at using UK suppliers and personally I prefer what they put in their boxes. Lastly, a purely practical point but one worth considering, Riverford deliver to me on a Tuesday, just as Friday/Saturday market produce is running out, but Abel and Cole deliver on a Friday - useless for me! I have made a Korean version which also includes the raw egg. I find it amazing that traditional cultures thousands of miles away used similar methods, which tells me it must be good for us. I actually got a little choked up reading it - seriously, maybe it's just that I'm tired and a bit stressed from packing for a trip, but mostly I think this just touched something in my heart - something I long for. This summer is the first time that Prague has had a farmers market since communism. Going to it was wonderful, but they definitely haven't worked out all the kinks yet. It was an amazing experience, but hasn't happened all that regularly and it is very far away from my home. I long for a weekly regular farmers market close by that I can take my kids to and get to know the farmers. I hadn't even realized how much I long for this until I read this. Thank you for posting this on Two for Tuesdays! Karen, this is a beautiful post. Very classy for a very classy lady! Your article does not only apply to the UK but to America as well. People are so used to foods being subsidized here that things really should cost a whole lot more than they do. When you make the choice to spend wisely on high quality foods and support local artisans and farmers you make a choice to support traditional agriculture and farm families. You also get much better food and can feel the connection to it more readily! Thanks so much for sharing the real food love on the two for tuesday recipe blog hop! :) alex Karen, I love the newer header on your blog! Very classy for a very classy lady! I try to buy from them as often as I can. Certainly in the summer and fall I get all my fruits and veggies from them. (and from any kid who has a stand in his front yard) Great post. I know that some of the stalls are run by middlemen (or middlewomen, if you prefer) but several are run by the farmers themselves. You make a very good point about the pricing. The much higher prices have been a sticking point for us and I hadn't thought of it along these lines. One of the things I really like about the market is discovering exactly what is and what isn't in season. One fellow is selling bunches of young vegetables (his thinnings). Two weeks agao, we bought baby red onions from him. This week, there were no more baby red onions; they were replaced with baby Spanish onions. He also sells fenugreek greens (methi) and cleverly had made a methi curry for people to taste. Because we had already got some spectacular looking turnips - with the tops - from him, we'll wait til next week for the fenugreek. I can't wait to taste the turnip greens (we're going to use them to make palak paneer). We have a weekly farmers’ market in the park a couple of blocks away.
